Refuse (Solid Waste)

The Village contracts with private collection services for curbside pick-up for refuse and recycling collection for most residents. The current refuse contract is with Waste Management and the recycling contract is with Veolia Environmental. The fee for this service is listed separately on your tax bill. Commercial operations and multi-family rental properties are not provided these services and must make arrangements with a private contractor.

Preparing Refuse for Pick Up
> Recommend that refuse be bagged even if it is placed in a garbage can, to avoid littering of loose garbage during pick-up. Loose garbage is the responsibility of the homeowner, not the contractor.
> Recommend placing bags in garbage cans if refuse is set out over night. Plastic and paper bags are more accessible to animals and the contractor is not required to pick up loose garbage.
> Refuse is limited to 10 cans, bags or bundles per house, per week. Larger amounts will require special arrangements with Waste Management and, possibly, an additional fee.
> Numerous small items should be combined in a can, bag or bundle to avoid the 10 item limit.
> A garbage can cannot exceed 30 gallons.
> Weight of a can, bag or bundle cannot exceed 80 pounds.
> Bundled items cannot exceed 4 feet in length.

Missed Collections
If the contractor makes an error and fails to collect your refuse or recycling, you should contact the contractor directly. The contractor is required to return within 18 hours of notification, and will often return the same day. It is not considered a failed collection if:
>  refuse or recycling was not at the street when the contractor passed your house,
>  you violated a disposal rule, such as mixing paper and glass recycling in the same bin.

Pick-up Schedule
Refuse is picked up once a week and recycling is picked up once every other week. Each residence's collection occurs on the same day of the week unless there is a scheduled holiday that falls during the week (see below). Pick-up will occur any time after 7:00 a.m. on your scheduled day, so containers should be set out at the road or curb by that time.  Village ordinance prohibits placing trash out earlier than 4:00 p.m. the day before pick up. The contractor is not required to arrive at the same time each week. If you are a new Caledonia resident, contact Diane (835-4451) to find out your neighborhood's pick-up schedule.

Holiday Pick-up
Pick-ups for refuse and recycling will not occur on a holiday and will be delayed by one day. Pick-ups on all subsequent days of that week will also be delayed by one day.  If your regular pick-up day is on Friday and a holiday falls during the week, your pick-up day will be Saturday.  Holidays include: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.  Dr. Martin Luther King Day is NOT considered a holiday by both Waste Management and Veolia Environment and the pick-up schedule will not be interrupted.
