What to Recycle

CARDBOARD

 

NEWSPAPERS

GLASS CONTAINERS

  • Jars & Bottles only (clear, green, brown, etc...)
  • No Light Bulbs
  • No Dishes or Glasses
  • No Window Glass
  • No Broken Glass

Remove lids and place in regular refuse. Lightly rinse. No need to remove labels. 

PLASTIC CONTAINERS

  • Containers marked PETE or HDPE  #1-#7 such as soda or liquor bottles, milk, detergent, water, shampoo, juice, gasoline, etc. are accepted.
  • No radiator, or anti-freeze bottles
  • No motor oil bottles

STEEL, TIN, ALUMINUM CANS

  • Food cans only
  • No cans for paints or chemicals
  • No foil, pie plates or caps.

RECYCLING BINS
Bins are to be placed at curb prior to 7:00 am on the scheduled day of collections. Although our present recycling contractor is Veolia Environmental, the blue container marked BFI may be used along with the container marked "Caledonia." In cases where people move from a Caledonia residence, the containers must stay with the residence. If you have more material that your containers can handle, use a transparent bag. Additional bins are available at the Caledonia Village Hall at a cost of $7.50ea.

YARD WASTE
Located behind the Safety Building at 6900 Nicholson Road.

Site opens the last Wednesday in March.

Hours: 
Wednesday, 1:30-7:00 p.m.
Saturday, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Sunday, 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Caledonia Residents Only
The site is open to Caledonia residents only. Yard waste from commercial landscaping operations is not accepted at the site. Residents must present a picture identification to the attendant before entering the site.

Yard waste allowed at the site includes leaves, branches and grass clippings. Residents are encouraged to leave grass clippings on their lawns. We ask that tree branches have a maximum diameter of 20 inches and a maximum length of 6 feet. Yard waste must be kept out of refuse. Only yard waste is accepted at the drop-off site. 

Do Not Drop Off the Following Items! 
Rubber Tires-Contact your local tire store or car dealership, Kestral Hawks Landfill (Oakes Road) 884-7080.
Recyclables- To dispose of a large appliance (refrigerator, stove, freezer, washer, dryer, window air conditioner, dishwasher, dehumidifier, microwave, water heater), you must make special arrangements with one of the following contractors:  A-1 Appliances, 636-9002; Appliances Pickup, 636-9320; West Appliances, 634-6919; Refigerant Recovery, (414)643-7740. Typically, appliances manufactured prior to 1979 may contain capacitors and any cooling appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners and freezers contain freon.

WASTE OIL

Motor oil and other petroleum-based oil can be disposed of at the Village Waste Oil Drop-off Site, located directly behind the Safety Building at 6900 Nicholson Road. To enter the site, first pick-up a key at the Police Dispatch window of the Safety Building. You will be required to show a drivers license or other identification. The site is open only to Caledonia residents and is not open to commercial operations. Protect our Lake and groundwater! Please do not dump motor oil on the ground or pour it down a storm sewer or sanitary sewer
Hours: Open seven days a week, 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

BATTERIES & TIRES
Lead acid batteries and tires should be taken to businesses that sell them. The Village does not dispose of those items. Generally, the businesses that accept used tires and batteries charge a small fee.

OLD PAINT CANS
Old paint cans with paint still in them should have the lids removed and allowed to stand until all contents become hard. Kitty litter can be used to hasten the drying process. The cans then may be placed in the normal refuse.

CONCRETE AND ASPHALT
A.W. Oakes and Rohner Asphalt are accepting old chunks of asphalt, which they grind and recycle. A.W. Oakes and Azarian Wrecking accept old chunks of concrete, which are also ground and recycled. Residents should call ahead. Do not mix the two materials. A.W. Oakes is located at 2000 Oakes Road in Racine, Rohner is at 9615 Charles Street in Sturtevant, and Azarian is at 9631 Charles Street in Sturtevant. Call for additional information: A.W.   • Put items in blue recycle bins - glass, metal, paper, cardboard, etc. in your blue bins for pick-up.
  • Garbage- Contact Waste Management (garbage contractor) regarding disposal of nonrecyclable materials (1-800-640-5571).
  • Concrete/Asphalt/Rocks-Contact A.W. Oakes (886-4474), Rohner Asphalt (886-4388), or Azarian Wrecking (637-4153).
  • Sod/Soil - Contact a local landscaper, or Waste Management (a fee will be charged) for landfill disposal.
    Batteries- Contact a local battery store regarding trade-ins or disposal.
  • Mattresses/Large Furniture - Contact Waste Management (1-800-640-5571) for special pick-up.
